KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) -- Missouri Congressman Bill Emerson, who was suffering
from inoperable lung cancer, died Saturday at Bethesda
Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. He was 58.
The Congressman had been a heavy cigarette smoker for many years. In commenting on the death, presumed Republican Presidential nominee Bob Dole said "There is no solid link between lung cancer and tobacco. It is a well known fact that nicotine is not addictive. Many people smoke cigarettes and die of stroke or heart attack instead of lung cancer. There are no laws against selling cigarettes. Tobacco products are a major export from the United States and help our balance of trade. I think it is time to get rid of the liberal college graduate anti-smoking mentality in Congress. First we need to do something about that land dealing woman in the White House. I think it is time we recognize the great contributions of our war veteran tobacco farmers. You sure don't find any tree huggers in the tobacco industry! I'm tired of all of these AMA reports about cancer and tobacco. I think the AMA causes cancer." "These liberal campaigns to end smoking in the workplace have to end. All these studies about second hand smoke look like second hand science to me. And anyway, I bet you these so called scientists are all driving foreign made cars with Darwin fish on them. So much for those Evolutionists. Real Americans believe in fair trade. If somebody wants to smoke tobacco, let them." "After all, what about the rights of RJ Reynolds and Philip Morris ? Don't multi-national conglomerates have rights too ? Nobody is forcing anyone to buy tobacco and yet they still do, day after day, I'd say that is PROOF that tobacco is not addictive!" Former Senate Majority leader Dole was speaking to a group of leaf crop farmers in North Carolina. |
