View of history through black, lesbian eyes July 27, 2010 Berit I found this book very well-written and engaging in that it kept my attention. It brought up some historical aspects I had previously been unaware of, and a perspective on an era I had not encountered before. So it was enlightening and absorbing reading. I highly recommend it.
Zami: My New Favorite Book October 7, 2009 W. Seferos (Salt Lake City, UT) This book is fabulous. It truly resonated with me and my experiences. Lorde writes beautifully! Read this.
Great! May 8, 2009 Johanna C. Vinueza (Los Angeles, CA USA) It was in excellent condition and was shipped fast! I am very satisfied with this seller. I received this book within a few days.
What it was Like to be a Black Lesbian During the McCarthy Era April 24, 2009 Bonnie Brody (Fairbanks, Alaska) This memoir is of a black lesbian coming of age during the McCarthy era. Idealism, drugs, and trying to connect with others from the 'gay-girl' community are major themes. The book conveys the difficulty of being a minority - black, female and lesbian - and the impenetrable boundaries that are everywhere.
Audre Lorde also writes about her close relationships which appeared to be without substantive intimacy. Alcohol, drugs and mental illness often provided barriers to keep the sense of 'other' always in the forefront.
This is a fascinating book and an essential read for anyone interested in what it was like to be a minority during the McCarthy era.
