Product Description Dumb Jock is a touching, coming-of-age story about a reserved, self-conscious, teenage boy growing up in a small northern-Michigan town. Jeff Irwin is short for his age, timid and studious, never yet having dared to take any chances for fear of ultimate rejection or failure. He is a bit of a social outcast and lives quietly in the shadows of the popular kids at his school.
Afforded the opportunity to assist the town's high school football hero Brett Willson, Jeff embarks upon the challenge of educating the world's dumbest jock. The ensuing relationship that develops between the two young men proves far more challenging, however, than any tutoring session. Their budding friendship helps bring Jeff out of his shell and reveals a much deeper side of the dumb jock.
Tragedies befall the ill-suited young couple, and the losses they endure are unthinkable. In the end, however, they must decide whether to be true to their identities or return to the previously held conformity of their comfortable stereotypes.

A Little Overdone? August 17, 2010 C. H. Williams (Webster, NY USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I guess I don't understand why the story had to have this strong 'dominant/submissive' slant to it. I think it could've still worked if the guys played more evenly matched roles physically.

Coming-of-Age
Amos Lassen
I must start off by saying that I was at a loss for a title for this review and I really did not want to call it "Coming-of Age" because the book is so much more than a coming-of-age story. The book, while about youngsters, is a book for adults. It will take you back to the time when you were going through very much the same thing as our hero, Jeff Irwin.
Jeff is short, studious, shy and an all-around nerd. He fears rejection and he takes no chances but that all changes when he agrees to tutor Brett Wilson, the high school football star who is dumb as a piece of wood. As you can expect, a love story develops between the two and Jeff emerges on his own and we see a whole new side to Brett, the dumb jock.
The story is set in Boyne City, Michigan in the early '80's, before hate crimes and the AIDS epidemic so things were different then. What we did learn during the epidemic is that there are gay people everywhere even in small towns like Boyne City.
Jeff considered tutoring Brett to be an ordeal because he felt that Brett, being a jock, had no mind for anything to do with schoolwork. Jeff is really surprised when he discovers that Brett does, indeed, have a mind and that he is also interested in being Jeff's friend. So the story is not really about the love between the two guys as it is about growing up and becoming who you really are. Brett teaches Jeff that he is capable of love--both giving and receiving and Jeff begins to become the person he never thought that he could be. It is Brett's strength that allows him to do so. Brett learns that he too can be different and stops denying who he really is.
The characters of Jeff and Brett are drawn wonderfully and the style of the novel is excellent--one of those kinds of books that you do not want to close the covers on. Jeff Erno knows how to tell a good story and this book shows just that.
excellent read February 28, 2010 Michael Scrimpshire (Columbus, Ga) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an excellent coming of age story that is very well written. It has just enough erotica to keep you going and reminds me of the days when I was a teen trying to get what I wanted and still keep up appearences. I found I could not put this down from the first page and read it through in a day. One of the few books I have ever picked up and just had to read straight through. The author is a very talentesd story teller and this reviewer can onl;y hope that he writes many many more titles for my kindle!!!!

An Important Coming of Age Story December 19, 2009 Rich (Humboldt County CA) Having never read anything by this author, I was apprehensive to purchase "Dumb Jock." I am ecstatic that I bought it. The story is well-written and true-to-life--I experienced something very similar in my own life. It is a novel that you must finish, and quickly--you have to know what happens to these characters. The story transported me back 23 years to my own experiences. Although somewhat painful to relive, it was comforting to find others struggling with the same issues, to find how they dealt with them in their time. The author's voice is a welcome sound, and I will look forward to reading more from him.
