Product Description
The third novel in the Adrien English series finds the "ill-starred and bookish" mystery writer and bookseller battling demons--maybe literally. After bookstore clerk Angus flees following terrifying death threats, Adrien must contend with a mysterious Satanic cult, a hot and handsome university professor, and his on-again/off-again relationship with closeted LAPD Homicide Detective Jake Riordan. And, oh, yes, murder...

4 out of 5 stars Fun to Read   August 25, 2010

Wonderful! Funny dialogue, interesting mystery, wonderful characters. Very little romance though, and what there was was heart-breaking.

This is book 3 in the Adrien English Mysteries series. I can't wait to read the next book.

4 out of 5 stars The ghouls of Christmas present   July 3, 2010

A bookstore clerk receives spooky and threatening phone calls at work and flees for his life. The store is later marked with a strange symbol and the owner (our hero), feeling threatened himself, sets off to investigate. As the bodies pile up it appears that a Satanic cult might be responsible. This read was a marvelous page-turner that kept me up to the wee small hours. Sad to say, then, that the ending is "curious" at best and not a surprise. Several loose ends may have been left for the next in this series. I will go back and read the earlier entries, however. The writing is quite good here.

5 out of 5 stars The Hell I CAN Say!   February 12, 2010

How is it that one can love and hate the same book? Can love the story for its depth and emotion, the murder mystery plot with all its subtle and not so subtle points, and at the same time, hate the emotions pulled directly from the body's soul?

I have to start off by saying I strongly dislike Guy Snowden, not because he's a despicable sort, but because he is just the opposite. He is what Jake is not: openly gay, academically intelligent, a connoisseur of the arts, wine and food, a sophisticate comfortable in who and what he is. But mostly, I dislike Guy because he's ready and willing to accept Adrien, even love Adrien in how Adrien deserves to be loved.

The Hell You Say had me laughing with the opening scenes and intrigued before the first chapter ends. Adrien's sales clerk, Angus becomes more than a (more-or-less) silent add-on who is frightened of Jake and uncertain about Adrien, since Angus is directly and indirectly behind Adrien becoming embroiled in the latest homicide Jake's investigating. Adrien's attempts to help Angus lands him neck deep in another murder, in hot water, in the middle of Jake's case, and into a satanic cult. It is because of Angus that Adrien meets Guy Snowden, professor of the occult at UCLA. And, it is through Guy that the seeds of discontent in his relationship with Jake fertilize and bloom.

In "Dangerous Thing," we see the glimpse of what Adrien and Jake could have; in "The Hell You Say," we see what they have disintegrate. Like a cracker in water, the tenuous bonds of their relationship dissolve; Jake announces his intentions and Adrien's heartbreak is heard round the world. The distance created between them doesn't stop Jake from trying to keep Adrien safe and off the list of the investigation's `person of interest'.

Josh introduces a new set of characters, additional `family' to involve themselves in Adrien's life and set him up to do Lisa's bidding. We see Lisa, Adrien's mother, become more than the self-centered, over-fussing woman -- not that she changes, we're shown that there's so much more depth to her as her relationship with the soon-to-be husband is revealed and added family members changes the nucleus dynamic.

It was with trepidation and relief I finished the book; it was with trepidation and anticipation I opened the fourth book in the series "Death of a Pirate King".

Review is of entire series!

*************************************
It is 3:40am and here I am typing away on my laptop writing a review for a series I just finished reading. I should have packed it up and called it a night as the girls will no doubt be pestering me for breakfast bright and early, but the last book of the Adrien English series was so perfect, so sigh worthy that I absolutely had to get my thoughts out before I could fall asleep.
I started this series not knowing what to expect. It came highly recommended by Smexybooks and she has never steered anyone wrong before, but I have never read a M/M romance before. True to form, Ms. Smexy did not disappoint and this series is a must read. Fictionwise has this series classified as M/M erotica but I have a hard time classifying it as erotica. Yes, there are some smexy scenes in it, but the plot and relationships between characters steal the show in every book. Because of the strength of the last 3 books, I am giving the series as a whole 5 stars.

Adrien English is likable and funny, often sarcastic but not overly so. He is curious, finding himself close to far more dead bodies than one would think is possibly. The relationship between him and Jake is an unlikely one where they seem to knock heads more than kiss. I would have liked to sit them down and stage an intervention more on several occassions. They seemed to take turns being unable to be emotionally honest and often saying the wrong words. On one hand I am glad this series was only 5 books long, I am not sure my heart could take the emotional turmoil that their relationship caused me!

The plots for all 5 books were well done. The mysteries were interesting and demanded equal footing with the romantic plot. I did find the storyline in A Dangerous Thing, book 2, to be less interesting than the others. I felt the changes in Jake and Adrien's relationship were most important to the series, but the plot kept trying to push them out of the way.

Ultimately, book 5 left the biggest impression on me. I laughed out loud at the one liners and sighed at the tender side Jake finally showed us. I held my breath during many scenes hoping one of them would say the right thing and happiness would be in their future. Never have I read a series that was completed so well and did so without compromising the characters or the growth they had to experience. Even upon finishing The Dark Tide I kept hitting the "next" button trying to deny the book was really done. Realizing it was truly the end, I actually grinned and hugged my kindle for a moment in gratefulness.

Wow. Very few books have shocked me like this one. Did NOT see the plot twists coming. It had my heart racing & not from the mystery aspect.

Yes, Jake was a jerk, but just enough emotion revealed that it was caused by (major)denial & confusion, not intentional cruelty.

Adrien...I absolutely adore this character. And Jake too, even with his flaws.

I'm so grateful that I waited to read this series - I don't think I could've handled the heartbreak & suspense while waiting for book 4!
